Fin is in need of socialization outside of school, badly. We, his parents, are likely not the best role models for that. We see family a lot, and often if we do have social interaction with our own peers, it is away from our children. Little G is still a little too young for play dates. When a parent of another child from school told us about a play group on Monday’s at a local Little Gym I thought we would give it a try.
I did my best, I talked about it everyday ahead of time, Little G talked about how much she “LOVES” it there. I got everyone in our house to talk it up. Knowing how things have gone in the past with Fin and new experiences, I asked my Pops to watch Little G while Fin and I went to the class.
I would not call it a disaster, not quite. Fin had a high anxiety level because it was a new place, even though all the children are familiar from school. He was a velcro kid, and struggled with the noise level. We refer to this at home as “Captain Cling On”. He reaches for me for a sense of stability, which is funny because in his “safe zones” he hates being touched.
Afterward when I ask what he liked the most, he ignored me (as usual). When I asked what he liked the least, his number one was the noise, number 2 was, as he put is, a lie. I asked what he meant, he went on to explain. They have PECS to show playing, and one for bathroom, and one for the water fountain. Fin uses PECS to guide him through the day. It’s a visual cue as to when things are going to happen in what order. Everyday he needs this to help him organize mentally. At the play group they showed them to the kids as a visual cue that they can use the bathroom, or the water fountain. Fin was mad because he expected to use the bathroom, and the water fountain after they played. Oh, boy.
I told him we were going back, it wasn’t met with enthusiasm. However, we do have a playdate with Kendall, and that is!

and little miss Kendall loved her playdate with Fin! New places are always tough, but if you keep coming back, they’re not new places anymore. keep at it. it took time for all of the little ones to adjust, and they all do it in their own ways. while Fin does velcro, Kendall laid on the ground covering her ears. But now that she’s accustomed to the place and the routine she’s a superstar. i hope you’ll jkeep coming back.
