I took Baby G to the pedi today. I mostly thought they were going to poke in her ears and make sure her infection had cleared. It turned into a full exam since I never took her in for a 9 month appointment. Bad mumma. We talked about her, and where she is developmentally. I, of course, think she is perfect. We have had some challenges with food, and she has a very sensitive gag reflex.
This is not unlike what we experienced with Fin. In his case we watched some pounds melt away due to the inability of formula, and nursing to keep him going caloric wise. Baby g has chubbed up nicely, has these full pink cheeks, and nice round belly. I was feeling that even though her diet consists mainly of formula, baby pureed fruit, occasional cereal, graham crackers, and baby crack that we were doing ok. Yes, you read that correctly. Baby Crack, otherwise known as “Puffs”. They are these flavored rice cereal bits that melt like starch packing peanuts as soon as you put them in your mouth. Baby g is addicted, can’t have just one and lord HELP you if she sees the container and you don’t let her have, say, at least a dozed of them.
I digress. The basic gist is EI was mentioned, and an assessment since she is 20% percentile for weight, and 80% for head circumference. I might change from calling her Baby g, to Lolly, for lollipop. I do not think she is spectrum, as her main area of sensory challenge appears to just be oral, but that is enough for me. I am a gag, and puke phobe. I am not sure I am helping the situation much. A couple of gags on a food and I give up. I went online and ordered a Nuk to see if that will help. We used one with Fin, I can’t say it did, or did not help, but I think it is worth a try. The weird thing is with Fin he would not put a thing in his mouth as an infant. I never worried when he picked something up he would try and eat it. With Baby g EVERYTHING goes in. I do need to share that recently Fin has something in his mouth, when I asked what it was he did not want to give it up. When finally he was forced to, it was a toe nail clipping he found on the floor. Now there is something to gag over.
Fin has recovered from school vacation. By the end he seemed pretty relaxed, and the tantrums were at a minimum. School really seems to bring out the doozies. After a week of no consistant schedule, and trying to get him back into the routine right out of the gate there is a hitch. 2 hour snow delay. Do they not understand how much that messes up an autistic kid?!?! Obviously not, and that in a nut shell is why the school system he is in sucks, they don’t get it.
I did the night time ritual tonight, and I was reminded of how sensitive he still is. I forget because he does not focus every second now on the ambient noises. Because he no longer points them out, I forget he hears them. Tonight he complained because he could hear heat coming out of the heat vent, the airplane going by, and the train. These noises are ever present and I no longer notice. Fin informed me they were preventing him from sleeping, and I did not doubt him for a moment.

Charlie started off his back to school with a snow delay too, only it was I who got knocked off the usual schedule: I left him with Jim, went to work, was preparing classes, and Jim called to say that I had not set out Charlie’s medicine and get back home now (I did, 45 minutes each way; missed my morning classes.) I digress—-those “developmental assessments” are beyond trying and worrisome—-let us know how things go and hope Fin gets back into the swing of things too.
Thanks for your kind words on my last Autismland post—I hated to end and miss writig on it, but it was time.

I gag a lot too, but I am told that my palatte is quite thick. Thus, it is not necessarily a neurological or psychological situation behind my physical gag reflex. I’d hope they would check out the mechanics of your daughter’s mouth and throat before declaring it an EI case. (Hefty tonsils and adenoids can also cause breathing problems, gagging, etc.)
Anyway, good luck!
